One way to keep up with new items is the library is obviously to browse the New Book Shelf. But you can also peruse our latest additions from anywhere using the Vision catalog – http://vision.schoolofvisualarts.edu/. When you enter Vision you are start on a Basic/Simple Search page, but using the tabs you can select alternatives – Guided Keyword lets you put in multiple terms using multiple search types; Course Reserve lets you look up what items your instructor has placed on reserve at the library for your use; and New Books lets you search the entire collection or particular sections (like DVDs or CDs) to see what’s been added within the time range you choose. You can use search terms, but to see results you only need to choose your parameters (Location / Period / Sort By) and hit the Search button.

As always, we welcome your requests and suggestions to help us make our collection as inspiring and informative as possible. Let us know if you have questions and happy listening in 2010!

New at the SVA Library – we have just added a copy of Carl Jung’s ‘The Red Book’ to the library’s oversized, rare book collection (Call Number: BF109.J8 A3 2009). For some background on this work, written and copiously illustrated by Jung based on a series of his visions, take a look at this NY Times article, The Holy Grail of the Unconscious by Sara Corbett.
Jung’s psychological approach emphasized personal development of the whole individual over a limited focus on just curing an illness. The Red Book was part of his own attempt to grapple with the unconscious and better understand the process of becoming a full individual in light the universal, mythic stories.
In connection with its translation and publication, the actual Red Book is on view as part of a show at the Rubin Museum of Art – The Red Book of C.G. Jung Creation of a New Cosmology through February 15th. (Click for slideshow of the exhibit.)
The Rubin Museum has hosted a series titled The Red Book Dialogues where they have invited a wide variety of artist, musicians, writers, among others, to talk about Jung’s work. Well known designer and SVA faculty member, Stefan Sagmeister will be appearing in the series this Wednesday – students take note of the special ticket price:
Jan. 6: Graphic designer Stefan Sagmeister + Patricia Llosa $7 Student Tickets
Jan. 13: Composer John Adams + Laurel Morris
Jan. 24: Poet Tracy K. Smith + Lisa DeBenedittis $7 Student Rate
Jan. 30: Mad Men creator Matthew Weiner + Morgan Stebbins
Feb. 10: Composer Meredith Monk + Morgan Stebbins

To maintain the collections they are only for use in the library, but students are free to check them out and access them. Just ask at the Circulation Desk to try one out:

If you follow the world of kid’s entertainment and/or cartoons, you may have heard that Nickelodeon Magazine has ceased publication due to the economic troubles of their corporate parent, Viacom. It’s sad news for their many readers as well as a loss to the broader cartooning world. The contributors featured in Nickelodeon Magazine and Nick Mag Presents represented an impressive survey of comics artists, from mainstream to the indy world, including artists such as Craig Thompson (Blankets -PN6727.T48 B53), Art Spiegelman (Maus – D 804.3 .S66), Johnny Ryan (Angry Youth Comics – Underground Comics collection), Dave Cooper (Underbelly – PN6727.C62 U64), Ivan Brunetti (Misery Loves Comedy – PN6728.B779 M57), Ellen Forney (Lust – PN6727.F656 L8) and many, many more.
But their closure did bring about one positive thing, at least for SVA students and faculty: the library received as a donation an almost complete run of the magazines from 1993 to 2008. Come in and browse them in the Periodical Stacks (those rolling shelves in the back). For a taste of what you will find, take a look at the Nick Mag LiveJournal page.
