Boxers & Saints is a two-volume graphic novel by Gene Luen Yang about the Boxer Rebellion, an uprising which took place in China between 1899 and 1901. The books, Boxers and Saints respectively, tell the parallel stories of two young people caught on opposite sides of the violent rift.
Boxers follows the tale of Little Bao and a band of commoners (trained in kung fu) who set out to free China from the foreign missionaries and soldiers who are terrorizing the countryside. Saints follows the experiences of Vibiana, one of the Chinese Christians persecuted by the uprising, as she struggles between her country and her faith.
You can find both volumes on the new book shelf in the main library alongside other books by Gene Luen Yang and those of Lauren Redniss (MFA 2000 Illustration)—both graphic novelists were recently awarded 2016 MacArthur Fellowships.
